It tells the story of a police officer’s search for a missing woman with many twists and turns along the way. It was critically acclaimed and won several awards including "Best Debut Director" at the 2011 National Film Awards.
The film features veteran actors such as Saeed Jaffrey, Naseeruddin Shah, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Ayesha Takia, Huma Qureshi and Rajat Kapoor in lead roles. The film also features music by A R Rahman. The film was shot in various parts of the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, including Kumaon, Garhwal, Chamoli and Pithoragarh.
Plot outline: The protagonists are the protagonist (Saif Ali Khan) and his wife (Fahad Fazili). They are about to go on their honeymoon when the protagonist’s brother mysteriously dies in a car crash. The protagonist suspects foul play in his brother’s death therefore begins investigating the matter only to find out that there is no evidence pointing towards any wrongdoing. He finds the woman he is in love with, Megha (Akshara Haasan), and finds out that she leads a happy, loving life.
He finds out that his brother had a mistress who is a small-time actress known as Khushi (Huma Qureshi). The protagonist finds this strange but does not take it too seriously until he finds out that Khushi’s mother, Annapurna (Naseeruddin Shah), is in fact Megha’s mother. The protagonist finds Annapurna to be strange and never opens up to him even though Megha vies for his affection.
The protagonist continues to investigate Khushi’s past and finds out that she is a ’black sheep’. She had a brother who called her to India from the USA when she was 13 years old for which she refuses to speak about. The protagonist finds a letter in Khushi’s locker at her apartment stating that her brother died in a road accident.
Megha’s mother, Annapurna, is revealed to be the mistress of Annapurna’s husband, Prem (Saeed Jaffrey). Prem was married to Aruna (Ayesha Takia) who was arrested for murder when Megha met her for the first time.
The protagonist finds this information out when he is sent to the USA by the police department to get reliable info on Khushi’s real identity. He was told by Aruna’s family that Khushi is Aruna’s daughter.
The protagonist comes back to India with this information and finds out that Annapurna had a son who died when Megha was 7. When they decide to meet Annapurna in her own house, she tells the protagonist that she is in fact his aunt.
